The City of Storm Lake has entered into an agreement with Buena Vista
University to lease and manage BVU’s Finkbine Natatorium during
the summer of 2006. The agreement will allow city swimmers to use BVU’s
pool during the construction of a new aquatic center as part of Project
AWAYSIS. After it was determined that safety considerations would require
closing the existing municipal pool next summer while the aquatic center
is being built, city officials remained committed to offering swimmers
an alternative and approached BVU.
“Everyone at Buena Vista University was enthusiastic about helping
us find a solution,” said Mike Wilson, AWAYSIS project manager. “We
were very pleased with the willingness of Dr. Moore, Randy Fehr, Jan
Travis and Keith Schmidt to work with the City to help resolve this problem.”
“As a community partner, BVU is proud to assist the city in filling
this gap, and we are pleased to help meet the needs of area citizens,” said
BVU President Fred Moore.
A schedule has been completed that will accommodate the needs of swimmers
in the community as well as regular users of BVU’s swimming pool,
allowing for swim lessons, swim team practice, open swim and all other
programs currently provided by the City and University at their respective
pools. Capacity constraints of the indoor pool will limit the number
of people who can be admitted and will impact swim meets. Representatives
of the White Caps will be making alternate arrangements for home swim
meets.
